I Don’t Do Homemade Cupcakes

I wanted to make a homemade cake for Braun’s birthday.

That’s a lie. I didn’t want to. There are days I don’t even have time to shower, so whipping up and decorating a cake was not something I really desired to add to my list.

The truth is that I felt like I had to. Because somewhere I bought the load of crap that good moms do homemade birthday cakes. And so I fretted and worried and tried to figure out how I would have time to squeeze in cake decorating whilst working a full time job and caring for two toddlers. And then, I finally gave in and ordered them from a local bakery.

Why do we get these ideas in our heads that if we don’t do x,y, or z, we aren’t a good mother? Homemade cupcakes don’t prove anything. There isn’t some “good moms do” list somewhere with boxes we have to check. But in my mind somehow mixing flower and piping icing equated with loving my children well?

So today, I’m here to say there are some things I just don’t do. I don’t make homemade birthday cakes. I don’t decorate for school events. I don’t sew Halloween costumes (or anything else, for that matter). I never one time made homemade baby food.

And you know what? I still think I am a pretty good mom. I know I do my best to ensure my little ones feel loved and have fun experiences. And I really think they will survive without me staying up all hours cursing as I attempt to ice a cake.

Let go of the lies. Love your kids and let that be enough.

Oh, and Braun? Well, he seemed pretty happy wish the bakery-made cupcakes he had at his party.

  1. I’m pretty sure my mom never once made a birthday cake for me or my brother. But we got to go to the bakery & decide what kind of cake we wanted every year. One year I even got to have 2 Barbie cakes where my mom brought in 2 of my Barbies & the bakery made them into cakes. I survived, felt loved, & got some pretty cool cakes.
